Placido Polanco back in Philly

After a year in which Placido Polanco won the Gold Glove at second base, the Phillies have signed him to a 3/18mil deal to play third base.

This is a good deal for Philly. Sure, he is 34 and only getting older. But playing in the American League he was a 5.3, 3.1, and 3.1 WAR player the past three seasons. He is average offensively and good defensively. He is a solid player and won’t do a total 180 in the next three seasons. And sure Polanco will be playing third base, a position he hasn’t played since 2005. But in 2426 career innings at third, he has a 9.9 UZR/150 and is a good fielder in general. He will probably be an average fielding third baseman at this point in his career.

Projecting Polanco going forward, I have his WAR as 2.7 in 2010, 2.1 in 2011, and 1.8 in 2012. If wins are worth about $4.4mil in 2010, $4.7mil in 2011, and $5.0mil in 2012 then Polanco will be worth about$31mil over those three years. Philly got a pretty good deal. The only way this deal will be a flop is if Polanco can’t even be an average player, which seems unlikely. Then factor in that Philly was just a decent offensive third baseman away from being a legtimate World Series favorite, and this is a favorable deal for Philly.
