Mike Cameron to Boston

After signing John Lackey, Boston stayed on the hunt yesterday and picked up Mike Cameron, for a 2/$15.5mil deal. As a Yankee fan who loves Cameron and wouldn’t have minded seeing him play LF in pinstripes next season, this move pains me. It also pains me since I can’t make jokes about Boston being a racist organization with a racist fan base.

This was such a smart move and steal for Boston. Cameron has been better than Jason Bay the past few seasons and projects to stay better than Bay over the next couple seasons. Bay wants super-star money while Cameron signed for under $8mil a year. Talk about a bargain. Cameron is a solid bat, and huge defensive upgrade over Bay. But this deal also has other affects.

Through this signing and the Lackey signing, a deal for Adrian Gonzalez could be near. Cameron allows Boston to ship out Ellsbury if need be, and Lackey allows Boston to ship out Buchholz. And even if that trade doesn’t happen, Boston appears to be a potential home for Adrian Beltre.

New York may have gotten Curtis Granderson, but the Red Sox have gotten better themselves and the 2010 divisional race could be one of the most exciting races between the teams within the past decade.
